Carlo
Dusio, CISITALIA's
founder had a great dream: in 1946 he had introduced the D46
a single-seat car which he had given to many famous pilots of that time,
but he wanted to creat a new, revolutionary G.P. car. He came to know
that a certain Ferdinand Porsche had created a very interesting project:
a race car with rear-central engine for the Auto Union. So he contacted
the Italian representative agent of the PORSCHE
KONSTRUKTIONBURO UND MOTORENFAHRZEUG, LUFTAHRZEUG UND WASSERFAHRZEUG,
Karl Abarth.
In 1947 Porsche sold its project to the Cisitalia and Abarth became one
of the factory's director. In the same year, engineer Savonuzzi (whi had
created some astonishing Cisitalia 202
with aerodynamical autobody) left the factory and Abarth became the race
team's chief. Since the beginning he take a great care of the prototypes
on works, from the D46 to the 202.
He created also the 204, a race car
with short wheelbase with a tuned 1100 Fiat's engine.
But he was still unsatisfied so projected a new better frame in
comparison eith the 202's unit. It had a shorter wheelbase, destined to
receive the 1100 Fiat's engine developed for the 204:
in the end of the 1948, the Coupè GT 205 project bore. But the
Cisitalia came into bad conditions and in 1949, according to president
Peron's proposal, Carlo Dusio flight to Argentina to found the AUTOAR
but neither there he succeed in having success and he was forced to
close the factory. Before leaving, Dusio had aggreed with Abarth upon
some things: Abarth received three 204s,
two frames with engine, transmission and wheels, a race engine and other
things. With this dowrty, Abarth founded with Armando Scagliarini, in
1949, the ABARTH e C. S.r.L. On the
bonnet of his cars, he had put his emblem with a scorpion. In
the beginning of 1959 the Project 205
was completed: it wasn't a renamed Cisitalia but a real Abarth with a
specific frame, engine and autobody: it was shorter and thinner with a
smaller front area. The aerodynamical advantage caused a better max.
speed: 180 km/h than 160.
This creation was due also to Dusio's help who was certainly responsible
for the choice of Vignale's work for the autobody (drawn by Giovanni
Michelotti).
In aerodynamical version, the 205 A
won in its category, the 1950 European Cup at Monza. In the same year,
he arrived 9th in the under 1100 cc. category. At last, it was shown at
1950 Turin Motor Show. Then it was purchased by two Americans. He
was taken to California where it received a Mc Cullough engine and raced
at Torrey Pines (Ca). Then the original engine was installed again and
it was used on normal street until 1955. It was taken to O'Sullivan
Square Museum where, in 1981, during a fire, it was crushed by an
Overland.What remained, was
purhcased by a patient enthusiast who restored it completely: after five
years the car is sitll wonderful.
