MASERATI COUPE' 4200

The Maserati Coupé is the most comprehensively advanced car in the high performance GT sector, offering exceptional outright speed in a luxuriously equipped four-seater.
The Maserati Coupé is equipped with the all-new, 390-bhp 4.2-litre alloy V8 engine which powers the car to a top speed of 285 km/h, covering the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.9 seconds. The Formula 1 style gearshift provides a full automatic option for ease of use, and the advanced transaxle layout with the rear-mounted gearbox in unit with the differential provides optimum weight distribution for ideal handling
Designed by Giugiaro's Italdesign, the Maserati Coupé joins the recently introduced Spyder and shares some of the soft-top car's styling innovations, such as the more pronounced and muscular bonnet line which gives a hint of the new engine below, and the new tail-light clusters with clear lenses.
Interior space has been increased, with an additional 25 mm of head room and 15 mm more leg room, and Maserati has also introduced an attractive new range of exterior colours.
The Coupé and the Spyder will be presented together at the Los Angeles and Detroit Motor Shows, heralding Maserati's return to North America.

The Coupé was designed to provide the ultimate in sporting performance combined with genuine on-board comfort for four adults, with full-leather trim, classy design and an ergonomic, driver-oriented driving position.

Electronics have been widely used, but with the focus on safety without compromising driving pleasure and control. Driving is also enhanced by the Maserati Info Centre, with its CD stereo, on-board computer, climate control system and optional GPS satellite navigation and telephone module. With 16 exterior paint finishes, 10 leather trim colours and five carpet colours to choose from, the personalisation possibilities are practically endless, and the colour schemes have been selected to make the interior a particularly attractive environment.

The superior performance of the new Maserati Coupé is attributable not only to the quality of its engine, but also to the excellence of the chassis and suspension design.

The suspension features arms and hubs in forged aluminium to reduce unsprung weight to a minimum and incorporates front and rear anti-roll bars and anti-dive and anti-squat geometry.

Also available, on request, is the Skyhook automatic damping control system, designed in collaboration with Mannesmann-Sachs and a world first on the Spyder. This adaptive damping system uses six acceleration sensors to detect the driving conditions and automatically adjust the aluminium dampers to suit the road conditions, and responds 10 times faster to inputs than conventional electronic damping systems.

With the Skyhook system the driver can also choose between two different settings: Normal (for maximum comfort) or Sport (for maximum performance).

The Maserati Coupé is available with both manual 6-gear transmission, and electro-hydraulically activated 6-gear transmission with gear changes controlled by microprocessor. The Cambiocorsa gearshift gives the driver the choice between an extremely sporty manual gearshift (with two sports settings available) or Full Automatic. In both cases the clutch is automatically activated by the electronic management system integrated with the engine control.
The Cambiocorsa function is activated using the levers behind the steering wheel, while the four different settings available - Normal, Sport, Full Automatic and Low Grip - are selected via separate buttons.

The new 4,244 cc 90° V8 engine is especially compact and lightweight (just 184 kg - 405 lbs), and boasts a highly evolved, race-bred design. This new V8 is the first of a new generation of Maserati engines designed to combine performance, torque, efficiency and low emissions in compliance with existing and future regulations.
The crankcase and cylinder heads are in aluminium and silicon alloy, and the crankshaft runs on five main bearings. Timing is by way of two chain-driven overhead camshafts per cylinder bank and four valves per cylinder. The intake camshafts are equipped with a high pressure continuous valve timing control system which reacts in less than 0.15 seconds.

The engine features dry sump lubrication and integrated Bosch ME7.3.2 ignition and injection systems with OBD II (On Board Detection and Diagnosis System) which detects operating malfunctions and ensures that emissions regulations are respected.
The engine incorporates an electronic drive-by-wire system, while optimum engine/gearbox management is guaranteed at all times through a sophisticated network of electronic control units (ECU) connected by a CAN (Controlled Area Network) line.
The performance figures speak for themselves: maximum output of 390 bhp (287 kW) at 7,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 46 kgm (451 Nm - 333 lbs/ft) at 4,500 rpm.

The transaxle layout means that the gearbox (a newly designed, manual 6-speed longitudinal gearbox) is at the rear in unit with the limited-slip differential, guaranteeing an optimum weight distribution and handling balance. This set-up provides greater stability and cornering poise and also provides maximum traction for searing acceleration take-off.
The transaxle layout provides a rigid link between the engine and gearbox via a steel tube which houses the transmission driveshaft. The high torque available is transmitted through a coaxial hydraulic dry twin-disc clutch with a torsional flexible coupling.
