CHRONO BEST FRIEND.

CHRONO BEST FRIEND. THE LAST “COMPETITION” CHRONOGRAPH SIGNED ROLEX, THE COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA REF. 116500LN, CONSIDERED BY MOST MEMBERS A HOMAGE TO THE HISTORICAL REFERENCE 6263, REPLACES REF. 116520. THE REPLACED MODEL, PRESENTED IN 2000, WAS IN TURN THE HEIR OF REFERENCE 16520 (1988) WITH MOVEMENT 4030 BASED ON ZENITH EL PRIMERO. LIKE ITS PREDECESSOR 116520, EVEN THE NEW 116500LN, MADE IN STAINLESS STEEL AND WITH MONOBLOC BEZEL IN BLACK CERAMIC, IS EQUIPPED WITH CALIBRE 4130.

Rolex Daytona, it is sufficient to mention it to immediately think about the crowned “must have”; a chronograph which despite (ref 116520, calibre 4130) has not been subjected to any kind of mechanical and aesthetic evolution during 16 years, remains one of the dreams of those who love chronograph, besides the Rolex brand, the sports timepiece for excellence.

Compared to its predecessor, the innovation of the Rolex Daytona 116500LN, available with black or white dial and waterproof up to 100 metres, is the black Cerachrom monobloc bezel: the first time for a stainless steel Daytona 904L. In fact, the ceramic bezel was already present on both the reference 116515LN with Everose gold case and on the reference 116515LN with platinum case.

One question arises spontaneously: how to decide between the “old” glossy and so sensitive bezel (who owns one maybe has tested the “problem”) and a bezel less “shining”, giving “less diameter” (40 mm) but which is, thanks to the ceramic peculiarities, virtually scratch-resistant and also shielded against ultraviolet radiation? Of course, it is a personal choice, although many owners of both the models prefer the “totally steel”.

The tachometric scale design also offers an innovation; in fact, compared to the previous model, it presents, like platinum and gold models, the tachymeter numbers following, sinuously in a circular shape, the bezel profile. The question is, “is it an appropriate choice or does it reduce the chronograph masculinity?” Certainly, it was an almost compulsory step: adapting the design of the tachymeter numbers to that already present on platinum and gold Daytona models. The 3 counters profile, even on the latter reference, like the previous one, is silver/blue. Even with regard to the bracelet, there are no innovations; in fact, that model is still equipped with the Oyster bracelet with satin inner and shiny exterior. The Oysterlock buckle is equipped with the Easylink extension (+ about 5 mm).

The beating heart is still the automatic calibre 4130 (column wheel, blue Parachrom hairspring, 72 hours power reserve) which, in addition to the COSC certification, also is equipped with the Rolex Superlative Chronometer Certified, an internal Rolex certification requiring a -2/+2 seconds precision.

FEELINGS

Wearing a Rolex Daytona, regardless of reference, is certainly a pleasure. You feel like carrying around a timepiece which has made the story of the Maison and beyond.
The bracelet, heaviest and “structured” compared to the previous references, allows an easier case weight/bracelet giving you a particular wearing comfort.
A “weighty” sports chronograph which excites, never boring and which, importantly, is a worthwhile investment as it is considered to be a “good shelter”.
