L’ultimo nato dalla collaborazione tra Richard Mille e Rafael Nadal, in attivo dal 2010, è l’RM 27-03. Quando ci si trova davanti a un capolavoro di tecnologia e ingegneria meccanica del genere si dovrebbe andare oltre la tonalità cromatica (qui prescelta con ovvia ratio) limitandosi ad ammirarlo deliziandosi la vista.
La cassa dell’RM 27-03 (47,77 x 40,30 x 12,75 mm) è in Quartz TPT® nei colori giallo e rosso in onore della Spagna e gioca sull’alternanza cromatica tra zone satinate e micropallinate. Le fibre di quarzo di cui è composta la cassa, oltre a offrire un rapporto resistenza/peso particolarmente favorevole, sono anallergiche e alquanto resistenti ai raggi UV. L’intensità delle sfumature gialle e rosse è stata ottenuta grazie all’impregnazione di sottili strati di silicio (45 micron di spessore) in resine pigmentate secondo un procedimento esclusivo di sovrapposizione degli strati di filamenti prima di essere portati a 120 gradi (tecnica sviluppata dalla North Thin Ply Technology -NTPT®).
La lunetta e il fondello, anch’essi in Quartz TPT®, sono direttamente fissati sulla platina in Carbon TPT®.
Il cuore meccanico pulsante è un movimento a carica manuale (peso 3,83 grammi, 21.600 a/h, bilanciere a inerzia variabile in Glucydur, bariletto a rotazione rapida -un giro in 6 ore anziché 7,5- con cricco a rinculo progressivo, sistema antiurto KIF Elastor KE 160 B28, 70 ore di autonomia) con ore, minuti e tourbillon su platina monoscocca in Carbonio TPT® (più strati di filamenti, separati e paralleli, di fibre di carbonio dallo spessore massimo di 30 micron ciascuno) in grado di resistere fino a sollecitazioni di 10.000 g.
I ponti scheletrati e stilizzati in titanio grado 5, oltre a sostenere la gabbia del tourbillon, sembrano quasi voler abbracciare il bariletto a rotazione rapida. L’insieme ricorda la testa di un toro, simbolo della Spagna ed emblema scelto da Nadal. A rimarcare la liaison con il tennis, per la rimessa all’ora e la ricarica si agisce su di una corona dinamometrica in Quartz TPT® a forma di pallina.
Il quadrante è protetto da vetro zaffiro (1.800 Vickers) con trattamento antiriflesso ambo i lati dallo spessore di 1,20 millimetri al centro e di 4,90 millimetri alle estremità.
Impermeabile fino a 50 metri, l’RM 27-03, realizzato in 50 pezzi, è abbracciato al polso con un cinturino ultraleggero in poliuretano in un vitaminico color arancio.

The sporty RM 27-03, produced in a limited edition of only 50 pieces, will be Rafael Nadal‘s (nine-time winner of the French Open Roland-Garros), new ally in the matches ahead on his wrist.
Aesthetically, this timepiece pays homage, with the striking red and yellow hues of its Quartz TPT® case, to Rafa’s
native Spain. The intense burst of colour is achieved by impregnating fine layers of silica (just 45 microns) thick with tinted resin according to a proprietary process developed in Switzerland that stacks the filaments in layers before heating them to 120 °C. When it comes to releasing a new shade of Quartz TPT®, achieving colour stability compliant with REACH standards while resolving issues of biocompatibility and durability represents a tremendous display of prowess on the part of the engineers at Richard Mille and North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT®). The quartz fibres used in this case, which is water resistant to 50 metres, offer a very advantageous
strength/weight ratio, as well as being anallergic and highly resistant to UV rays.
As a playful nod, winding and hand setting are conducted using a torque-limiting crown of Quartz TPT® in the shape of a tennis ball.
The main innovation of this extraordinary watch lies in the capacity of its tourbillon calibre to withstand shocks
up to 10,000 g’s. The ultralight tourbillon calibre is assembled on the skeletonised unibody baseplate of Carbon TPT® with a precision to the nearest micron, while the reduced number of components in this configuration permits additional weight savings, lightening the whole watch. The rapid winding barrel provides an unvarying flow of energy for the full 70 hours of running time.
Highly stylised, the sharp, streamlined curves of the skeletonised
bridges in grade 5 titanium encircling the barrel, the great wheel and the mechanical winding tourbillon (21,600 vph, free sprung Glucydur balance with variable inertia and a terminal-curve spring,fast rotating barrel-6 hours per revolution instead of 7.5 hours, shock absorbers KIF Elastor KE 160 B28) together evoke the forward-facing head of a bull: symbol of Spain, this animal is also Nadal’s chosen emblem.
The dial is protected with a crystal sapphire (1800 Vickers) with anti-glare treatment (2 sides). The ‘comfort’ strap has no buckle.
