La Mercedes-Benz Classe S Model Year 2018 è il nuovo punto più alto della tecnologia e dell’innovazione Mercedes-Benz in relazione al suo proverbiale comfort e immagine di raffinata ammiraglia tedesca.
Il nuovo modello in anteprima mondiale al Salone dell’Auto di Shanghai 2017 compie un deciso passo in avanti in termini di tecnologia al servizio del comfort, della sicurezza e dell’efficienza.
DESIGN
Propone il suo inconfondibile stile che ne ha fatto un‘icona europea del lusso ma declinato con un tocco di garbata sportività. Il frontale presenta uno stile differente a seconda della motorizzazione scelta ma, in tutti i casi, presenta la classica calandra anteriore con listelli orizzontali e verticali, abbinati alla parte inferiore con un’immagine più o meno sportiva. La Classe S si può avere con carrozzeria “standard” o passo lungo in allestimento Maybach. La versione AMG, infine, segna l’appartenenza alla nicchia delle berline di lusso super-sportive. Il catalogo prevede, infine, 7 modelli di ruote in lega, da 17 a 20 pollici.
INTERNI
L’abitacolo (luminazione interamente a led con 64 tonalità) presenta un grande schermo digitale su metà plancia. Su questa si animano due display: strumentazione di fronte al pilota e schermata centrale. Il guidatore può scegliere tre stili («Classic», «Sport» e «Progressive»). Il volante è ora provvisto di controlli a sfioramento come sullo smartphone mentre il sistema infotainment può essere gestito con touch pad o comandi vocali.
Debutta su questo modello il massaggio Energizing, disponibile a richiesta: il sistema integra le funzionalità di sedili, climatizzazione, luce e musica per andare a comporre un catalogo di 6 programmi della durata di 10 minuti ciascuno (Freschezza, Calore, Vitalità, Piacere, Benessere, Training).
MOTORI
Mercedes-Benz S 560 4MATIC. Monta un V8 biturbo da 469 Cv e 700 Nm di coppia massima. Dichiara un consumo di 8,5 l/100 km
Mercedes-Benz S 350 d 4MATIC. E’ motorizzata con un 6 cilindri in linea di 2,9 litri per 286 Cv e 600 Nm di coppia massima. Dichiara appena 5,5 l/100 km
Mercedes-Benz S 400 d 4MATIC. E’ equipaggiata con lo stesso motore della S350 d ma potenziato a 340 Cv e 700 Nm. Dichiara 5,6 l/100 km nel ciclo medio.
Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+. Al posto del V8 biturbo di 5,5 litri si utilizza il V8 biturbo già disponibile in gamma. Fornisce 612 Cv e 900 Nm. Il consumo medio dichiarato è di 8,9 l/100 km.
Nei prossimi mesi si aggiungerà una motorizzazione ibrida con motore termico spinto da un compressore elettrico e possibilità di guidare in modalità completamente elettrica per 50 chilometri.
TECNOLOGIA
Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. Gli standard di funzionamento sono stati aumentati. Ora la regolazione attiva della distanza dal veicolo che segue (Distronic) e il sistema di sterzata attiva sono ancora più efficienti: viene infatti mantenuta la distanza di sicurezza e viene effettuata una sterzata autonoma; la velocità viene ora regolata automaticamente nelle curve o prima degli incroci. E’ stato migliorato anche il sistema di assistenza attiva al cambio di corsia.
fari MULTIBEAM LED con luce abbagliante ULTRA RANGE. Quest’ultima produce la massima intensità luminosa consentita dalla legge, e la luminosità della luce abbagliante diventa inferiore al valore di riferimento di 1 lux solo a una distanza di oltre 650 metri
Magic Body Control migliorato. Il sistema integra il Road Surface Scan (una telecamera esegue una scansione della strada e regola lo smorzamento degli ammortizzatori a controllo elettronico Active Body Control) e la funzione Curve (che consente alla carrozzeria di inclinarsi fino a 2,65° verso l’interno della curva e ridurre così le forze centrifughe).

Mercedes S-Class Model Year 2018 is the new pinnacle of the German’s brand model range. Among the highlights is an all new engine range with a series of new technologies for electrification of the powertrain. Intelligent Drive takes another step towards autonomous driving and the level of comfort and wellness sets new standards in the interior.
DESIGN
The S-Class features a redesigned lower bumper section with integrated visible tailpipe trim. Three distinctive torches of light as an exclusive design element are also new (new LED lamps with crystal-look tail lamps stand out at the rear too). The front bumper with pronounced air intakes and sporty looks is also new. All models are fitted with a new radiator grille (three twin louvres as well as vertical strips with a high-gloss black finish on 6 and 8 cylinder’s version). The LWB version and with V12 engine is fitted with additional chrome-finish vertical strips.
The tailpipes are framed by a chrome trim element, which spans the entire width of the vehicle. Seven new light-alloy wheels with diameters between 17 and 20 inches are available as standard or options.
COCKPIT
The interior of the new S-Class is characterised by the two new high-resolution displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches; the driver can choose from three different display styles (“Classic”, “Sporty” and “Progressive“) and also configure the information and views relevant to them at will.
The new S-Class has touch-sensitive controls in the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. The infotainment system can also be operated via the touchpad with controller in the centre console and by LINGUATRONIC voice control. As before, the interior lighting uses LED technology with 64 colours that offers a wealth of individual settings.
For particoularly demanding S-Class passengers, The ENERGIZING comfort control is a world-first entering series production: This optional uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the wall heating as well as lighting and musical atmospheres (“Feelin’ Good” by Leon Riskin, for instance), and enables a specific wellness set-up. Six programs (all run for ten minutes) can be selected: Freshness, warmth, vitality, joy, comfort and training.
ENGINES
Mercedes-Benz S 350 d 4MATIC / S 400 d 4MATIC. The new in-line six-cylinder diesel engine makes its début. It comes in two output levels with 210 kW (286 hp) and 600 Nm as well as 250 kW (340 hp) and 700 Nm. S 350’s average consumption is rated at 5,5 l/100 km, 5,6 on the S 400.
Mercedes-Benz S 560 4MATIC. The new 4 litres biturbo V8 engine replace the previous V8 5.5 biturbo unit. It comes to the starting line with 345 kW (469 hp) and 700 Nm. . To lower the fuel consumption, four cylinders of the new V-8 are deactivated simultaneously under partial load with the help of the CAMTRONIC valve-lift adjustment system.
Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+. Despite less displacement, the new engine produces 450 kW (612 hp) and 900 Nm. Average consumption is rated at 8,9 l/100 km.
In addition to the aforementioned engines, further new power units are planned for the new S-Class: in-line six-cylinder petrol engines as well as a plug-in hybrid with about 50 kilometres of electric range.
ONE STEP FORWARD THE AUTONOMOUS DRIVING
DISTRONIC Active Proximity Control and Active Steer Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of curves or junctions. This is complemented by a considerably improved Active Lane Change Assist and additional functions of the Active Emergency Stop Assist. Thanks to enhanced camera and radar systems, the new S-Class has an even better view of the surrounding traffic: In addition, for the first time it makes use of map and navigation data to calculate driving behaviour.
The S-Class made a technological statement of superiority in 2013 with ROAD SURFACE SCAN. The system detects bumps ahead of the vehicle and adjusts the ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension accordingly. In the new S-Class this suspension control is further improved: The stereo camera of the system now scans the road even more thoroughly, even in dusk and at speeds up to
180 km/h. Another comfort enhancement is the CURVE curve-tilting function, available in the S-Class Saloon for the first time. The body tilts to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees and thereby reduces the centrifugal forces perceived by the passengers.
